Immersed vs Pimsleur

Pimsleur gets you speaking. Immersed plans the hundreds of hours that come after.

Pimsleur is an audio course: a voice asks you to say something, you answer out loud, and phrases come back at growing gaps until they stick. Immersed is a language immersion tracker and planner: a free plan built from your answers, then a daily timeline for the shows, podcasts and books you learn from, with reports of your hours. One teaches. The other plans and counts.

Free. About two minutes. No account, no card.

The short version

Checked October 24, 2026. Something out of date? Tell me.

If you are starting from zero, want to speak early and have a half hour in the car or on a walk, Pimsleur is one of the best-designed beginner courses there is. Immersed does not teach, so it is not a replacement.

If you want a plan for the hours of listening, watching and reading that build real understanding, and a record of every hour, that is Immersed. Most learners who like Pimsleur do best with both: Pimsleur for the first months, Immersed for the input around it and after it.

And Immersed counts more than hours. It shows what your hours were made of, across nine activities from Passive Listening on the commute to Speaking, because that mix is what explains how fast you start to understand.

01What each one is for

A course that teaches you, and a tracker that plans your input.

A Pimsleur lesson is about 30 minutes of audio. You hear a phrase, you are asked to say it before the answer plays, and it returns later at longer and longer gaps. Pimsleur calls these the Principle of Anticipation and Graduated Interval Recall. It is speaking practice you can do with your hands on the steering wheel.

Immersed teaches no grammar and no vocabulary. It answers different questions: where in your day immersion can come from, what your first months can look like, what to watch and listen to at your level, and whether you are actually putting the time in.

  • Pimsleur: about 30 minutes a lesson, 30 lessons a level, up to five levels in the biggest languages
  • Immersed: a free blueprint in about two minutes, then a daily timeline and sessions you start with one tap
The example blueprint: a two-hour protocol of Dead Time Listening, Focused Visual Immersion and a Vocab Surgical Strike, with a Shadowing bonus round
From the example blueprint: a two-hour day, block by block.

02Where the course stops

Pimsleur builds a base. Understanding comes from hours of input.

Pimsleur is deliberately small. Each level adds a few hundred words, so even five levels leave you well short of following a TV show or a podcast between natives. Reviewers agree it is strongest for beginners and thin on reading, grammar explanations and advanced material. That is not a flaw so much as a design choice: it is a speaking course, not a library.

What closes the gap is input: shows, YouTube, podcasts and books in your language, hundreds of hours of them. Immersed is built for that part. The blueprint sets milestones for your first months, the Immersion Library suggests what to watch, listen to and read on platforms you already use, and Discover gives you a feed of creators who post in your language.

The Immersion Library's For You picks: beginner-friendly creators in your language
The Library: picks in your language, marked by level.

03Your commute

The same half hour, used for Pimsleur now and podcasts later.

Many people do Pimsleur on the commute. Immersed's blueprint finds those slots for you as Hidden Immersion Time: the drive, the dishes, the gym, with the minutes each one adds up to over a week.

Put the Pimsleur lesson on your timeline as a repeating task in that slot and tick it off. When you finish the course, the slot is still there. Swap the lesson for a podcast at your level (Discover lists 4,685 podcasts in 11 languages), log it as Active Listening when you follow closely or Passive Listening when it plays while you drive or cook, and the habit carries on without a gap.

Paste a Spotify or Apple Podcasts link and it plays inside the session. In the Android app, in testing for Google Play, the audio keeps playing with the screen off, and the running session sits on the lock screen with Finish and the Aim button.

  • Plan the lesson into a free gap and repeat it every weekday, with a reminder
  • Log a Pimsleur lesson as a Speaking or Study session, or afterward if you forgot to press play
  • Rate how much you understood, and watch that number climb as input takes over

04Looking back

Lessons completed, or what your hours were made of.

Pimsleur shows you which lessons and levels you have done, along with daily challenges in the app. That tells you how far through the course you are.

A total of hours is one number. Two learners with 300 hours each can be in very different places: one spent most of them listening closely to podcasts at their level, the other mostly with the language in the background. Immersed's Growth page shows which one you are. Every session is one of nine activities, and your hours are stacked by activity, next to a line of how much you understood over time.

The report also lists your top shows, podcasts and channels with links back to them, and a consistency grid with streaks. Export it as PDF, Excel or CSV, or share a report link.

  • Hours by activity: Speaking for Pimsleur, Active and Passive Listening for podcasts, Reading and the rest
  • Comprehension over time, from the 1 to 5 rating you give each session
  • Your top shows and channels, linked from the report

What Pimsleur does well

  • You speak from the very first lesson, out loud, which most apps never ask you to do
  • Truly hands-free: lessons work in the car with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, on a walk, or offline
  • No setup and no decisions: one 30-minute lesson a day, in order, and you are done
  • Spaced repetition for spoken phrases, built into the audio so you never manage a review queue
  • Good accent models, and Voice Coach gives pronunciation feedback on Premium
  • More than 50 languages, including ones few apps cover, like Twi, Ojibwe, Swahili and Haitian Creole
  • Decades of refinement and a big following among beginners and travellers

What Immersed does that Pimsleur doesn't

  • Builds a plan for your immersion from your time, goals and level, with milestones for your first months
  • Finds the slots in your day where listening fits, and puts tasks on a timeline you tick off
  • Tracks every hour in the language, not only one app: Pimsleur, YouTube, podcasts, books, tutors
  • Suggests what to watch, listen to and read for your language, and gives you a feed that counts as immersion
  • Breaks your hours into nine activities, so you see how much was listening, speaking or reading, and charts how much you understood
  • Keeps a podcast playing with the screen off in the Android app (in testing for Google Play), with the session on the lock screen
  • Keeps going after the course ends, which is when most of the hours happen

Pick Pimsleur if

  • You are a complete beginner and want to say real sentences in your first week
  • Your study time is a commute or a walk and you want something fully hands-free
  • You want a set path where you never have to decide what to do next
  • Your goal is travel conversation and good pronunciation more than reading
  • You are learning a language with few other resources and Pimsleur has a course for it

Pick Immersed if

  • You have a base already and want to build understanding through shows, podcasts and books
  • You want a plan that fits your actual day and tells you how many hours you are looking at
  • You use several resources and want every hour in one place
  • You have finished Pimsleur, or are close, and want to know what comes next

Use both, or move over

Use Pimsleur to start, use Immersed to immerse

In your first months, do the Pimsleur lesson on your commute and log it in Immersed. Around it, add short, easy input: a podcast for learners, a YouTube channel at your level, picked from the Library. That way the words Pimsleur gives you start turning up in real speech.

As you reach the later levels, or finish the course for your language, move the commute slot over to podcasts and let input take most of the time. A sign it is time: you can follow slow, clear speech on a topic you know. Keep Pimsleur as a review if you like it, and let Immersed show the hours adding up.

FAQ

Questions people ask.

Is Immersed a Pimsleur alternative?+

Not really. Pimsleur is a course that teaches you to speak. Immersed teaches no grammar or vocabulary; it plans, tracks and shows your immersion. They work well together, with Pimsleur early on and Immersed for the hours of input around and after it.

Can Pimsleur alone make me fluent?+

Reviewers broadly agree it builds a solid beginner base in speaking and listening, but each level adds only a few hundred words, so it will not get you to following native TV or podcasts on its own. Most learners pair it with lots of listening and reading.

How much does Pimsleur cost?+

On the US pricing page I checked on 2026-10-24: $14.95 a month for audio only, $19.95 a month or $149.95 a year for Premium in one language, and about $20.95 a month for All Access to every language, with a 7-day free trial. Prices vary by region and promotion.

How do I log Pimsleur lessons in Immersed?+

Press play in Immersed when you start the lesson and pick Speaking or Study, or log it afterward with the start and stop time. You can make it a repeating task on your timeline so it sits in your commute slot every weekday.

When should I move from Pimsleur to immersion?+

You do not have to wait. Add easy input from the start. Shift most of your time to shows, podcasts and books once you can follow slow, clear speech on a familiar topic, or when you run out of Pimsleur levels for your language.

Does Immersed work offline or in the car like Pimsleur?+

Not like Pimsleur. Immersed has no downloads or CarPlay and Android Auto; what you log offline syncs when you're back online. A Spotify or Apple Podcasts link plays inside the session, and in the Android app (in testing for Google Play) it keeps playing with the screen off, with the session on the lock screen.

Stop guessing. See what your hours add up to.

Answer a few questions and Immersed builds your plan: a daily routine that fits your life, milestones for your first months, and things to watch at your level. Free, about two minutes, no account needed.

The plan is free and stays free. No card.
