Duolingo builds the streak. Immersed helps you turn the streak into an ability.
Duolingo is the most popular way to start a language: free, fun and five minutes a day. Immersed is a language immersion tracker and planner: a free plan built from your answers, then a daily timeline for the shows, podcasts and books you learn from, with reports of your hours. They do different jobs, and most learners need both at different times.
Free. About two minutes. No account, no card.
The short version
Checked October 24, 2026.
Something out of date? Tell me.
If you are starting from zero and want a free, friendly habit with sounds, words and simple sentences, start with Duolingo. It is very good at that, and Immersed teaches no grammar or vocabulary.
If you have a long streak and still can't follow a show, a podcast or two people talking, the gap is hours of real listening and reading. Immersed plans those hours around your day, tracks them and shows you the proof.
Duolingo is fine. The question is what comes next. A streak counts days and a timer counts hours, but what you did in those hours is what builds the ability, and that is what Immersed shows you.
01The gap
A thousand-day streak is not the same as understanding.
Duolingo is built to bring you back every day, and it works: about 58.7 million people used it daily in the second quarter of 2026. Many of them have a great time for a year or three, then put on a show in their language and catch a few words.
That is not a failure of Duolingo. A course teaches you the parts of a language. Understanding fast, real speech comes from hearing a lot of it, and five lesson minutes a day is a small slice of the hundreds of hours that takes. Learners on Reddit say it plainly: six months of lessons helped with signs and menus on a trip, but not with following two native speakers talking. A 500-day streak and a basic conversation are different things.
- Duolingo measures lessons, XP and days in a row
- Immersed measures hours of real listening, reading and watching, split across nine activities, with how much you understood
- Both count a streak. Only one shows what the streak was made of

02Before you press play
A plan for the hours, not just the minutes.
Duolingo hands you the next lesson. When you step outside the app, nothing tells you what to watch, how long for, or where it fits in a day that already has a job and a commute.
Immersed starts with a free blueprint, about two minutes of questions about your time, goals, level and what you already watch. It returns milestones for your first months, a daily protocol, the Hidden Immersion Time in your day (the commute, the dishes, the gym), and a library of things to watch, listen to and read in your language. No account needed, just a name and email.
- An Immersion Library with picks from the main platforms for Watch, Listen and Read
- A five-tool Immersion Toolkit picked for your language
- First-month sprints written for your plan, and the Foundations stage of the Fluency Checklist

03While you immerse
A timeline for your day, and a timer that knows what immersion is.
With Immersed Pro, the timeline lays out your day from Wake up to Wind down. You plan an episode into the lunch gap, a podcast into the commute, and tick them off.
Press play and pick one of nine activities: Active Listening, Passive Listening, Active Subtitles, Reading, Study, SRS, Speaking, Writing or Shadowing. Paste a YouTube, Spotify or Apple Podcasts link and it plays inside the session. Afterward you rate how much you understood. Your Duolingo time can go in as Study, so the course and the immersion sit in one history.

04Looking back
Your 1,000 hours and someone else's 1,000 are not the same.
Duolingo shows you XP, leagues and the streak. Those are good at keeping you coming back. A count of hours is a step closer to the truth, but it is still one number. A thousand hours of podcasts in the background and a thousand hours of shows at your level, watched with full attention, are different thousands.
Immersed's Growth page stacks your time by the nine activities, draws your comprehension line over time and keeps a consistency grid with your streak. Reports list your top shows and channels, with links back to them. That mix is what explains progress, and why a learner two months in can be ahead of one six months in. Export a PDF, Excel or CSV, or share a report link.
- Hours broken down by the nine activities, not one total
- Comprehension rising on the same kind of show, so you can see the hours working
- Share cards with Aim, like the free mission card and the Language Day card (Pro)

05Owl and Aim
Duo rewards showing up. Aim rewards the hours.
Duolingo's owl is the most famous mascot in language learning, and the streak, XP and leagues around it reward one thing very well: showing up for a lesson today. That is why people keep coming back for years.
Immersed has a mascot too. Aim is the pink one, and every outfit Aim wears is earned by hours of real immersion, logged by activity. Hour Marks come at 1, 5 and 10 hours, a ladder of outfits runs from 25 to 1,200 hours in a language, and others come from habits like a week-long streak or a month of daily SRS. None are sold. Ten badges on your Profile level up from grey to gold. Each monthly Sprint (Pro) gives you a Mission and Daily Quests, and finishing it earns the month's medallion and the month's Aim.
Where Duolingo is ahead: leagues, friends and a much bigger game layer. Immersed has no leagues, friends or hours leaderboard. It does have free listening games in 12 languages with an all-time top 10 for each game and language, and Aim catches fire on a streak there, in your outfit.
- Sprints count your minutes and which of the nine activities you did. Your streak plays no part
- Aim brings your reminders and wears your outfit on share cards and in the games
- In the Android app, in testing for Google Play, Aim sits on a home-screen widget in your outfit and Aim's face is the app icon, changing with your day

What Duolingo does well
- A genuinely free course with no time limit, in more than 40 languages
- The best habit loop in language learning: streaks, reminders, leagues and the owl
- Short lessons that fit a queue or a coffee, so day one is easy
- Fun. People keep coming back for years, which most apps never manage
- Huge scale and polish: about 140 million monthly users in Q2 2026, and apps on every phone
- Reading, sounds and basic sentences for scripts like Japanese, Korean and Arabic
- AI Video Call conversation practice now coming to most Super subscribers
What Immersed does that Duolingo doesn't
- Plans hours of real immersion around your actual day, starting with a free blueprint
- Tells you what to watch, listen to and read in your language, with a feed that counts as immersion
- Breaks your hours down by nine activities, from Passive Listening to Shadowing, and charts how much you understood
- Rewards hours, not lessons: Aim's outfits, badges and Sprint medallions come from real immersion, and none are sold
- Shows your hours, consistency and top shows and channels in reports you can export and share
- Gives you the Fluency Checklist and monthly Sprints for after the course
Pick Duolingo if
- You are starting from zero and need the basics: sounds, script, common words, simple sentences
- You want something free and fun to build a daily habit first
- You learn best with short game-like lessons, leagues and a streak to protect
- You want one app for a language plus math, music or chess
- Your goal is casual: travel phrases, a hobby, keeping a language warm
Pick Immersed if
- You have a long streak and still can't follow a show or a podcast
- You know some basics and want a plan for hours of listening and reading
- You want help finding things at your level to watch, listen to and read
- You want to see what your hours were made of, and rising comprehension, not just days in a row
- You like a mascot and rewards, and want them earned by real immersion
Use both, or move over
Use Duolingo to learn, use Immersed to immerse
You don't have to quit Duolingo. Keep it as your Study time and log it in Immersed, while you add a podcast on the commute and an episode at night. Many learners keep the streak alive for years as a warm-up.
A good moment to start immersing is when you can read the script, know a few hundred common words and recognise simple sentences. That is often a few months into a course, well before you finish it. Easy input like kids' shows, learner podcasts and slow YouTube channels is where to begin, and the blueprint picks them for your level. The Fluency Checklist's Foundations, free on the blueprint, lists what to set up first.
From there, a monthly Sprint works like a Duolingo quest measured in real immersion: a Mission such as turning the subtitles off, plus Daily Quests like ten logged minutes. Over time the immersion hours grow and the course becomes the small part of your day.

FAQ
Questions people ask.
Can you become fluent with Duolingo alone?+
Most learners don't. Duolingo is good for the basics and the habit, but understanding real speech takes far more listening than short lessons give you. Learners who get there usually add hours of shows, podcasts and reading on top. Immersed is built to plan and track that part.
Does Immersed teach a language like Duolingo?+
No. Immersed doesn't teach grammar or vocabulary. It plans, tracks and shows your immersion. The free listening games in 12 languages are the closest it gets to a lesson.
When should I move from Duolingo to immersion?+
Earlier than most people think. Once you can read the script and recognise common words and simple sentences, start adding easy input alongside the course. You don't need to finish the tree first.
Does Immersed have a mascot and leaderboards like Duolingo?+
It has Aim, a pink mascot you dress in outfits earned by immersing (none are sold), plus badges that level up and monthly Sprints with a medallion and the month's Aim. The free listening games have all-time leaderboards for each game and language, free to view, with a free account to post. There are no weekly leagues, friends or hours leaderboard.
Is Duolingo Max still available?+
In September 2026 Max was reported as no longer offered to new subscribers, and Duolingo said it plans to bring Video Call to all Super subscribers. Existing Max subscribers could still renew at the time. Check the Shop in your app for what you can buy today.
Is Immersed free like Duolingo?+
Partly. The blueprint, the listening games with their leaderboards, Aim Runner, the Discord and the sample app are free, and a free account opens the Fitting Room for Aim. The timeline, sessions, Discover, reports and Sprints are Immersed Pro: $60 a year with a free week first, or $9.99 a month.
Can Immersed track my Duolingo time automatically?+
No. Immersed doesn't connect to Duolingo and never reads what you do in other apps. Log Duolingo as a Study session, live with the timer or afterward, and it shows up in your reports next to your listening and reading. Immersion starts with one press (one click on YouTube with Immersed for Chrome), and the Discover scroll and the free listening games log themselves.
