Immersed vs Mondly

Mondly teaches you the phrases. Immersed plans the hours where you hear them used.

Mondly, owned by Pearson since 2022, is a course app with short topic lessons, a daily lesson and a chatbot in more than 40 languages. Immersed is a language immersion tracker and planner. It turns immersion into something you can see, plan and keep: a free plan built from your answers, a daily timeline for the shows, podcasts and books you learn from, and reports of your hours.

Free. About two minutes. No account, no card.

The short version

Checked October 24, 2026. Something out of date? Tell me.

If you are starting a language and want quick, tidy lessons on travel, food or work phrases, with speech recognition and a chatbot to answer, Mondly does that. Immersed teaches no grammar or vocabulary.

If you have done the lessons and still can't follow a show or a podcast, the missing piece is hours of real listening and reading. Immersed plans those hours around your day, tracks them and shows you the proof.

Use Mondly to learn the basics and Immersed to immerse, starting well before you finish. Lessons and hours are each one number; what you did in those hours is what builds the ability, and that is what Immersed shows you.

01What each one is for

A phrase course, and a plan for the hours after it.

Mondly is built around short lessons grouped by topic: greetings, travel, food, health, business. A daily lesson greets you when you open the app, and weekly quizzes and monthly challenges review what you covered. Speech recognition checks your pronunciation, and a chatbot runs simple scripted conversations, like booking a table.

That is a good way to collect useful phrases. Reviewers are consistent about the limit: Actual Fluency called it decent for mastering the basics but said it will not get you far toward fluency alone, and named limited grammar and repetitive games as the main cons. Understanding real speech takes hundreds of hours of hearing it, which no lesson app gives you.

  • Mondly measures lessons, words learned and time in the app
  • Immersed measures hours of real listening, reading and watching, split across nine activities, with how much you understood
The example blueprint: a two-hour protocol of Dead Time Listening, Focused Visual Immersion and a Vocab Surgical Strike, with a Shadowing bonus round
From the example blueprint: a two-hour day, block by block.

02Before you press play

What to watch once the lessons stop being enough.

When you close Mondly, nothing tells you which podcast to try, which show is at your level, or where an hour of listening fits in a day with a job and a commute.

Immersed starts with a free blueprint: about two minutes of questions about your time, goals, level and what you already watch. It returns milestones for your first months, a daily protocol, the Hidden Immersion Time in your day where passive listening fits, and an Immersion Library with picks from the main platforms for Watch, Listen and Read. No account needed, just a name and email.

The Immersion Library's For You picks: beginner-friendly creators in your language
The Library: picks in your language, marked by level.

03While you immerse

A timeline for your day, and a timer for real input.

With Immersed Pro, the timeline runs from Wake up to Wind down. Plan an episode into the lunch gap and a podcast into the commute, set repeating tasks, get reminders and tick them off.

Press play and pick one of nine activities, from Active Listening and Passive Listening to Reading and Shadowing. Paste a YouTube, Spotify or Apple Podcasts link and it plays inside the session. Your Mondly lessons can go in as Study, so the course and the immersion sit in one history.

Press Play. Immerse: a live session clock, on your lock screen too

04Looking back

Words learned, hours heard, and what the hours were made of.

Mondly's stats show the words you have learned and the time you spent in lessons. That is useful while you are in the course. Once you are immersing, a count of hours is not enough either: your 1,000 hours and someone else's 1,000 are not the same if one was background audio and the other was shows at your level.

Immersed's Growth page stacks your time by the nine activities, draws your comprehension line over time and keeps a consistency grid with streaks. Reports list your top shows and channels, with links back to them. When the comprehension line rises on the same kind of show, you know which hours are working. Export a PDF, Excel or CSV, or share a report link.

What Mondly does well

  • 41 language courses, and you can learn from many native languages, not only English
  • Short topic lessons that fit a coffee break, with a daily lesson waiting each time you open the app
  • Speech recognition and a chatbot, so you say the words out loud from day one
  • Weekly quizzes and monthly challenges that bring old words back
  • A clean, simple app with a 4.7 rating from about 33,000 reviews on the US App Store
  • VR and AR apps for learners who want something different
  • Lifetime deals that often make it cheap for all languages at once

What Immersed does that Mondly doesn't

  • Plans hours of real immersion around your actual day, starting with a free blueprint
  • Tells you what to watch, listen to and read in your language, with a feed that counts as immersion
  • Breaks your hours down by nine activities, from Passive Listening to Shadowing, and charts how much you understood
  • Shows your hours, consistency and top shows and channels in reports you can export and share as proof
  • Rewards real immersion: Aim's outfits, badges and monthly Sprint medallions come from logged hours, and none are sold
  • Gives you the Fluency Checklist and monthly Sprints for after the course

Pick Mondly if

  • You are starting from zero and want short lessons with phrases for travel, food or work
  • You want speech recognition and a chatbot to practise saying things out loud
  • You want to learn through a native language other than English
  • You want several languages and can catch a lifetime deal
  • Your goal is casual: a trip, a hobby, a few useful phrases

Pick Immersed if

  • You have done the lessons and still can't follow a show or a podcast
  • You know some basics and want a plan for hours of listening and reading
  • You want help finding things at your level to watch, listen to and read
  • You want to see what your hours were made of, and rising comprehension, not words learned

Use both, or move over

Use Mondly to learn, use Immersed to immerse

Keep Mondly for the daily lesson if you like it, and log it in Immersed as Study. Then add easy input around it: a learner podcast on the commute, a slow YouTube channel at lunch, a kids' show at night.

A good moment to start is when you can read the script and recognise a few hundred common words and simple sentences. That is often a few weeks or months into the course, not the end of it. Over time the immersion hours grow and the lessons become the small part of your day.

FAQ

Questions people ask.

Can you become fluent with Mondly alone?+

Reviewers say no. Mondly is good for basics and phrases, but understanding real speech takes far more listening than short lessons give you. Learners who get there add hours of shows, podcasts and reading on top. Immersed is built to plan and track that part.

Does Immersed teach a language like Mondly?+

No. Immersed doesn't teach grammar or vocabulary. It plans, tracks and shows your immersion. The free listening games in 12 languages are the closest it gets to a lesson.

How much does Mondly cost?+

On the US App Store when I checked on 24 October 2026, a 12-month plan was $74.90 and monthly plans ranged from $7.99 to $15.90 depending on the offer. Lifetime deals for all 41 languages were selling for $89.99 on StackSocial. Prices change often, so check your own store.

Who owns Mondly?+

Pearson bought ATI Studios, the Romanian company behind Mondly, in April 2022. Mondly sits in Pearson's English Language Learning division.

When should I move from Mondly to immersion?+

Earlier than most people think. Once you can read the script and recognise common words and simple sentences, add easy input alongside the lessons. You don't need to finish every topic first.

Can I log my Mondly time in Immersed?+

Yes, as a Study session, live with the timer or afterward. Immersed doesn't connect to Mondly and never reads what you do in other apps, so you log it yourself. For immersion you press play once, and the Discover scroll and the free listening games log themselves.

Stop guessing. See what your hours add up to.

Answer a few questions and Immersed builds your plan: a daily routine that fits your life, milestones for your first months, and things to watch at your level. Free, about two minutes, no account needed.

The plan is free and stays free. No card.
