Immersed vs Language Transfer

Language Transfer teaches you how to think in the language. Immersed plans the hours of hearing it.

Language Transfer is a free, donation-funded set of audio courses built on the Thinking Method: a teacher and a student work out sentences together, and you pause and answer out loud. Immersed is a language immersion tracker and planner. It turns immersion into something you can see, plan and keep: a free plan built from your answers, a daily timeline for the shows, podcasts and books you learn from, and reports of your hours.

Free. About two minutes. No account, no card.

The short version

Checked October 24, 2026. Something out of date? Tell me.

If you want to understand how a language fits together and start making your own sentences, for free, Language Transfer is one of the best places to start. Immersed teaches no grammar or vocabulary.

Language Transfer's courses aim at the beginner stage and are not built to take you to conversation. Once you have done them, the gap is hours of real listening and reading. Immersed plans those hours around your day, tracks them and shows what they were made of: how much was Active Listening, Passive Listening, Reading or Speaking, and how much you understood.

Use Language Transfer to learn the structure. Use Immersed to immerse.

01What each one is for

A free course in building sentences, and a plan for the hours after it.

Language Transfer was started by Mihalis Eleftheriou, who teaches most of the courses himself with a volunteer student. Each track adds one rule or pattern and has you combine it with the last ones. The audio is edited with pauses so you answer aloud before the student does. You are told not to take notes. Complete Spanish runs to 90 short tracks, Complete Greek to about 120.

Reviewers like it a lot and agree on the limit. Actual Fluency gave it 4 out of 5 and called it beginner level, not built for conversational fluency, with no written lessons and no way to measure progress. The course teaches you to build sentences slowly. Understanding a native speaker at full speed comes from hundreds of hours of hearing them.

  • Language Transfer has no progress stats beyond where you are in the track list
  • Immersed measures hours of real listening, reading and watching, by activity, with how much you understood

From the example blueprint: a two-hour day, block by block.

02Before you press play

What to listen to after the last track.

A common question after the last track is "what now?" More courses and conjugation drills help, but the step that matters most is input: shows, podcasts and books in the language. The hard part is finding it at your level and fitting it into your day.

Immersed starts with a free blueprint: about two minutes of questions about your time, goals, level and what you already watch. It returns milestones for your first months, a daily protocol, the Hidden Immersion Time in your day, a five-tool Toolkit, and an Immersion Library with picks from the main platforms for Watch, Listen and Read. No account needed, just your name and email.

It also opens the first stage of the Fluency Checklist, Foundations: 11 things to have in place early, each with how to get there. With Pro, Discover adds a feed of native creators and 4,685 podcasts in 11 languages, so the commute slot never runs out of things to hear.

The Immersion Library's For You picks: beginner-friendly creators in your language
The Library: picks in your language, marked by level.

03While you immerse

A timeline for your day, and a timer for real input.

With Immersed Pro, the timeline runs from Wake up to Wind down. Plan a podcast into the commute where your Language Transfer tracks used to go, an episode into the lunch gap, and tick them off.

Press play and pick one of nine activities, from Active Listening and Passive Listening to Reading and Shadowing. Paste a YouTube, Spotify or Apple Podcasts link and it plays inside the session. Language Transfer tracks themselves can go in as Study, so the course and the immersion sit in one history.

A podcast you half follow while cooking is Passive Listening; one you follow closely on a walk is Active Listening. In the Android app, in testing for Google Play, the audio keeps playing with the screen off and the session sits on the lock screen.

Press Play. Immerse: a live session clock, on your lock screen too

04Looking back

Track 90 done, then what can you see?

Language Transfer tells you which track you are on. That is enough for a course.

Immersion takes months, and a total of hours tells you little. Your 300 hours and someone else's 300 are not the same if yours were mostly close listening at your level and theirs mostly background audio. Immersed's Growth page stacks your hours by the nine activities and draws your comprehension over time, so you can see which mix is moving you.

The report links back to your top shows, podcasts and channels, and adds daily average and a consistency grid with streaks. Export a PDF, Excel or CSV, or share a report link.

Both are good. At different things.

What Language Transfer does well

  • Completely free, with no ads, no account and no data sold
  • Teaches you to build your own sentences early, instead of memorizing phrases
  • Explains why the language works the way it does, often through what it shares with English
  • Audio only, so it fits a commute, a walk or the dishes
  • An app that downloads tracks for offline listening and keeps your place
  • Courses in languages few apps cover well, like Swahili and Greek
  • A 4.9 rating from about 1,600 reviews on the US App Store

What Immersed does that Language Transfer doesn't

  • Plans hours of real immersion around your actual day, starting with a free blueprint
  • Tells you what to watch, listen to and read in your language, with a feed that counts as immersion
  • Breaks your hours into nine activities, from Passive Listening to Shadowing, so you see what your time was made of, not only how much
  • Asks how much you understood and charts comprehension over time
  • Shows hours, consistency and streaks you can export and share as proof
  • Gives you the Fluency Checklist and monthly Sprints for after the course

Pick Language Transfer if

  • You are starting Spanish, Greek, Swahili or one of their other languages and want a free, clear way in
  • You want to understand the structure and make your own sentences, not just learn phrases
  • You learn well by listening and thinking out loud, with no screen
  • You want something to do on a commute or a walk

Pick Immersed if

  • You finished Language Transfer and still can't follow a native speaker
  • You want a plan for hours of listening and reading at your level
  • You want help finding podcasts, shows and channels in your language
  • You want proof of real hours and rising comprehension over months

Use both, or move over

Use Language Transfer to learn, use Immersed to immerse

Language Transfer fits well before and alongside immersion. Do a few tracks a day and log them in Immersed as Study. As soon as the patterns start to click, add easy input: a learner podcast, a slow YouTube channel, a kids' show.

Once you reach the last track, move the commute and the dishes to real listening. The blueprint finds the Hidden Immersion Time in your day and fills it with picks at your level, and the Growth page shows the hours building from there.

The blueprint also gives you the Foundations stage of the Fluency Checklist for free: the habits and tools to have in place once the course is behind you. The later stages, Immersing, Living in the language and Speaking & writing, come with Pro.

FAQ

Questions people ask.

Is Language Transfer really free?+

Yes. Every course is free on the website, the iOS and Android app, YouTube and SoundCloud, with no ads and no sign-up. It is funded by donations through Patreon and PayPal.

Which languages does Language Transfer teach?+

When I checked on 24 October 2026: Complete Spanish, Greek, Swahili and German (German is unfinished), plus introductions to Arabic, Turkish, Italian and French, and complete English for Spanish speakers. Japanese and British Sign Language were listed as in development.

How long is Language Transfer Complete Spanish?+

About 90 tracks, most of them 5 to 15 minutes.

Will Language Transfer make me fluent?+

Not by itself, and it does not claim to. It gives you a strong grasp of how the language is built. Understanding real speech takes hundreds of hours of listening and reading, which is the part Immersed plans and tracks.

What should I do after finishing Language Transfer?+
