Immersed vs Habitica

Habitica rewards showing up. Immersed shows what showing up added up to.

Habitica is a free habit tracker that turns your tasks into a role-playing game: check off a Daily and your character gains XP and gold, skip it and you lose health. A tick says you showed up, and even hours only say how long; what you did in those hours is the thing, so Immersed records every session as one of nine activities and rewards you only for real immersion. Immersed is a language immersion tracker and planner. It turns immersion into something you can see, plan and keep: a free plan built from your answers, a daily timeline for the shows, podcasts and books you learn from, and reports of your hours.

Free. About two minutes. No account, no card.

The short version

Checked October 24, 2026. Something out of date? Tell me.

If what you need is a reason to do your language every day, and a game, a party of friends and a pet to hatch would get you there, Habitica is free and good at it. It works for every habit in your life, not just your language.

If you already show up but can't tell whether it is working, Immersed plans the hours around your day, times them by activity and charts how much you understood. Plenty of learners use both: Habitica for the push, Immersed for the proof.

01Why people use it

A game that makes you open the textbook.

Habitica gives you three lists. Habits are things you do any number of times, Dailies repeat on a schedule, and To-dos are one-offs. Finish them and your avatar levels up, earns gold for gear and finds pets. Miss a Daily and you take damage, and in a party on a quest your friends take some too. That last part is what keeps a lot of people honest.

Language learners have used it this way for years. Habitica's own blog ran a Learning Languages use-case spotlight in 2017, and a simple setup is a Daily for Anki, a Daily for a lesson, a Habit for every podcast episode and a To-do for finishing a book.

A sprint every month: a mission, twenty quests, and a new Aim to earn. October's: turn the subtitles off

02What a checkbox misses

Ten minutes and two hours look the same.

A Daily called "Listen to Japanese" gets the same tick for one short clip as for a whole evening of drama. Habitica counts that you did it, not how long, what kind, or how much you understood. That is fine for building the habit and not much help once you want to know if the habit is working.

In Immersed you press play and pick one of nine activities: Active Listening, Passive Listening, Active Subtitles, Reading, Study, SRS, Speaking, Writing or Shadowing. The timer runs, you stop, rate your comprehension and the session lands on your timeline. Paste a YouTube, Spotify or Apple Podcasts link and it plays inside the session.

  • Forgot to press play? Log it afterward with the start and stop time
  • The play button can default to one activity, like Passive Listening on the commute
  • Immersed doesn't read your viewing history: you press play or log it. The Discover scroll and the free listening games log themselves
Press Play. Immerse: a live session clock, on your lock screen too

03The game layer

Habitica has gear and quests. Immersed has Aim, and you earn it by immersing.

Immersed has a mascot, Aim, and a reward system built on your real hours. Aim wears outfits you earn only by immersing: five day-one outfits, Hour Marks at 1, 5 and 10 hours, a ladder of 14 outfits from 25 to 1,200 hours in a language, and 13 more for habits like a 7-day streak, 20 dawn or night sessions or a 30-day SRS streak. You try them on in the Fitting Room. Nothing is sold, so every outfit says something true about your time.

Ten Profile badges level up from grey to gold, from Hours (up to 10,000) to Streak, Sessions, Night Owl and Dawn Patrol. With Pro, each month's Sprint is the nearest thing to a Habitica quest: you accept it, then work through one Mission and Daily Quests with reward chests. Finish the Mission and 20 quests in the month and you get that month's medallion for your shelf and that month's outfit for Aim.

The difference: Sprint quests count themselves from the sessions you log (the minutes, and which of the nine activities), so there is nothing to tick and no health to lose. There is no party. The free listening games in 12 languages have all-time leaderboards per game and language, and the Discord is where people keep each other going.

04Before you press play

A plan for the hours, not just a list of chores.

Habitica holds whatever tasks you write. It cannot plan your immersion around your day, show what kind of input your hours were, or what to put on tonight.

Immersed starts with a free blueprint: about two minutes of questions about your time, goals, level and what you already watch. It returns milestones for your first months, a daily protocol, the Hidden Immersion Time in your day, first-month sprints and an Immersion Library of things to watch, listen to and read. With Pro, the timeline lays out your day from Wake up to Wind down, with repeating tasks and reminders.

The example blueprint: a two-hour protocol of Dead Time Listening, Focused Visual Immersion and a Vocab Surgical Strike, with a Shadowing bonus round
From the example blueprint: a two-hour day, block by block.

05Looking back

Your character levels up. Does your listening?

Habitica shows your level, your gear and your streak on each Daily. It is a fun record of effort.

Immersed's Growth page stacks your hours by week, month, year and all time by the nine activities, so you see how much was active listening, how much passive, how much reading or speaking. A comprehension line shows whether you understand more, your top shows and channels are linked from the report, and a consistency grid holds your streak. That mix is what explains your progress: two learners with the same hours can be months apart because of how the hours were spent.

When the comprehension line rises on the same kind of show, the hours are working. Export a PDF, Excel or CSV, or share a report link.

What Habitica does well

  • Free, with the full game available without paying
  • Real motivation: losing health, and letting your party down, is a strong push to show up
  • Parties, quests, guilds and challenges for accountability with friends
  • One app for every habit: language, exercise, chores, sleep
  • Habits, Dailies and To-dos cover almost any routine you can write down
  • Apps on the web, iPhone and Android, and an open-source codebase

What Immersed does that Habitica doesn't

  • Times your sessions, so ten minutes and two hours are not the same tick
  • Shows what your hours were made of: time by each of the nine activities, a comprehension line, your top shows and channels linked
  • Rewards that come only from immersing: outfits for Aim, badges that level up, monthly Sprints with medallions, nothing to buy
  • Builds you a plan first, from your time, your goals and your level
  • Tells you what to watch, listen to and read in your language, with a feed that counts
  • Shows hours, comprehension and consistency you can export and share as proof

Pick Habitica if

  • Your problem is starting at all, and a game would get you going
  • You want friends in a party holding you accountable
  • You want one tracker for every habit in your life
  • You want something entirely free

Pick Immersed if

  • You already show up and want to know if it is working
  • You want time by activity and comprehension, not just checkboxes
  • You like game rewards but want them tied to real hours, not ticks
  • You want a plan for your day and help finding what to watch
  • You want reports of your hours you can keep and share

Use both, or move over

Habitica for the push, Immersed for the proof

Keep a Daily in Habitica like "Immersion session" and tick it after you press stop in Immersed. Habitica keeps the game and the party going, and Immersed keeps the hours, the activities and the comprehension ratings.

Over time, the Growth page tells you which kind of immersion you actually do, so you can rewrite your Dailies around it. If passive listening is most of your time, make that the Daily.

Pricing · checked October 24, 2026

What each one costs.

Immersed

  • Free: the blueprint for one language (with the Toolkit, Library picks and the Fluency Checklist's Foundations), the listening games in 12 languages with their leaderboards, Aim Runner, the Discord and the sample app. A free account also gets the Fitting Room's day-one outfits, Hour Marks and badges from game time.
  • Immersed Pro: $60 a year (starts with a free week, about $5 a month) or $9.99 a month. Timeline, sessions, Discover, Library, Growth and reports, monthly Sprints with medallions and the month's Aim, more languages.

Habitica

  • Free: Habitica says it can be fully enjoyed for free.
  • Optional subscription on the US App Store: $4.99 a month, $14.99 for three months, $29.99 for six months or $47.99 a year.
  • Gems for cosmetics and extras: from $0.99 for 4 to $19.99 for 84.

Habitica costs nothing unless you choose to support it, which is a real advantage. Immersed is about $5 a month on the yearly plan. They do different jobs, so free Habitica sits fine next to either the free blueprint or Immersed Pro.

FAQ

Questions people ask.

Is Habitica good for learning a language?+

It is good for the habit. Dailies for Anki, a lesson or a podcast, with a party to keep you honest, help many people show up. It doesn't teach or measure the language itself, so learners who want to see their hours add a tracker.

Is Habitica free?+

Yes. Habitica says it can be fully enjoyed for free. On the US App Store an optional subscription costs $4.99 a month or $47.99 a year, and Gems are sold separately.

Does Immersed have a game like Habitica?+

Not an RPG, but there is a game layer. Aim, the mascot, earns outfits from your real hours and habits (a 7-day streak, 20 dawn sessions, 1,000 hours in a language), badges level up from grey to gold, and with Pro each month's Sprint has Daily Quests, reward chests, a medallion and that month's Aim. The free listening games have leaderboards. You can't buy any of it: every reward comes from immersing.

Can I use Habitica and Immersed together?+

Yes. Track the session in Immersed and tick the Daily in Habitica. They don't connect to each other, so it is one tap in each.

Does Immersed track my hours automatically?+

No. Immersed doesn't read your Netflix or YouTube history. You press play when you start, or log the session afterward. With Immersed for Chrome, one click on the YouTube page starts the session, and the Discover scroll logs itself.

Is Immersed free?+

Partly. The blueprint, the listening games with their leaderboards, the Discord and the sample app are free, and a free account gets the Fitting Room for Aim. The timeline, sessions, Discover, reports and Sprints are Immersed Pro: $60 a year with a free week first, or $9.99 a month.

Stop guessing. See what your hours add up to.

Answer a few questions and Immersed builds your plan: a daily routine that fits your life, milestones for your first months, and things to watch at your level. Free, about two minutes, no account needed.

The plan is free and stays free. No card.
