Immersed vs Tandem

Tandem gives you a partner to talk to. Immersed plans the hours around it.

Tandem is a language exchange app: you teach someone your language while they teach you theirs, by text, voice notes, audio and video calls. Immersed is a language immersion tracker and planner: a free plan built from your answers, then a daily timeline for the shows, podcasts and books you learn from, and reports of your hours. Immersed has no chat and no partners. It plans and records the time around them.

Free. About two minutes. No account, no card.

The short version

If you want a native speaker to chat with, correct your messages and call now and then, Tandem is a well-run place to find one, and much of it is free. Immersed does not connect you with anyone.

If you want a plan for the hours of listening and reading that make those calls easier, and one record of everything, exchange time included, that is Immersed. A partner is not a requirement to start. It is a tool you choose when it fits, and Immersed fits it into your week.

Hours alone say little. Immersed shows what yours were made of, your calls as Speaking next to the listening and reading behind them, so you can see the mix that is moving you forward.

01What each one is for

A partner for a few chats, and the rest of your week.

Tandem lists more than 300 languages on its App Store page, including 12 sign languages. You find members who speak the language you want and want the one you speak, then chat, send voice notes or call. Partners can correct and comment on your messages, and there is translation inside the chat. Parties are group audio rooms for practising with more than one person.

An exchange is a few chats or calls a week. Immersed covers the other hours: how much input you need to understand your language, where it fits in your day, what to watch and listen to at your level, and a record of all of it, Tandem calls included.

  • Tandem: one-to-one chats, voice notes, audio and video calls, corrections, Parties
  • Immersed: a free blueprint, a daily timeline, nine kinds of session and reports
Your language, every day: a timeline of what you will watch, listen to and read

02Do you need a partner yet

A speaking partner is a tool you can choose, not a gate you must pass.

I learned Korean mostly through immersion, from my room in Maryland. My view: you don't need a partner to start. Many learners spend their first months listening and reading, and the conversations that come later are easier for it.

A partner earns its place when you want it: you want to try out what you have heard, you want real, everyday phrasing, or a regular call keeps you showing up. The Fluency Checklist has a last stage, Speaking & writing, for when you get there, and Speaking and Writing are two of the nine activities you can plan and track from day one.

03What to expect

A moderated community, with an exchange at its heart.

Tandem reviews new members before they can chat, which critics note can mean a wait in some countries. The upside is a community that feels more focused on learning than an open app. Like any exchange, your partner is a speaker of the language, not a trained teacher, and the deal is fair only if you give back time in your language too.

Tandem Pro adds unlimited translations, more search filters, profile verification and no ads. The free plan still covers finding partners, messaging and calls.

04Planning and logging

Put the call on your timeline, and log it as Speaking.

Immersed's timeline holds your day from Wake up to Wind down, so the Sunday call with your Tandem partner sits next to the podcast on your commute. Make it a repeating task with a reminder, and in the days before, plan input on the topic you want to talk about. Half an exchange is in your language anyway, so the input is what fills your half.

When the call starts, press play and pick Speaking; log texting as Writing; log it afterward if you forgot. The Growth page stacks your hours by activity, so Speaking sits next to Active Listening, Reading and the rest, with comprehension over time. Export a PDF, Excel or CSV.

That breakdown is the point. Ten hours of calls on top of two hundred hours of listening is a different learner from ten hours of calls on top of twenty. The report shows which one you are, and links back to the shows and channels that gave you things to say.

Plan it like a day: type "Netflix 7pm 40m" and it lands on your timeline at seven

What Tandem does well

  • Real native speakers to talk to, which no tracker or course replaces
  • A free plan that covers the core: finding partners, messaging and calls
  • More than 300 languages, including 12 sign languages, by its own listing
  • Members are reviewed before they can chat, which keeps the community focused on learning
  • Corrections and comments on your messages from someone who speaks the language
  • Parties, group audio rooms, for when one-to-one feels like too much

What Immersed does that Tandem doesn't

  • Builds a plan from your time, goals and level, with milestones for your first months
  • Plans your exchange calls into a daily timeline alongside the input that feeds them
  • Tracks every hour in the language, not only calls: shows, podcasts, YouTube, books, SRS
  • Suggests what to watch, listen to and read for your language, with a Discover feed that counts
  • Shows Speaking and Writing next to input in your reports, so you see the balance week by week

Pick Tandem if

  • You want to start talking with native speakers, mostly for free
  • You want a partner who corrects your messages
  • You prefer a reviewed community to a fully open app
  • You are learning a sign language or a less common language
  • Making a friend in the language is what keeps you going

Pick Immersed if

  • You want to build understanding through input before, or alongside, speaking
  • You want a plan that fits your actual day, not only the calls
  • You want one record of all your time in the language, exchange calls included
  • You would rather not depend on a partner's schedule to keep your streak

Use both, or move over

Talk on Tandem, plan and track it in Immersed

Put a regular call with your Tandem partner on the timeline as a repeating task, plan a few days of input on the topic before it, and log the call as Speaking. Your report then shows output and input side by side.

If you haven't started talking yet, you don't need to rush. Build a base of listening and reading first, watch your comprehension climb on the Growth page, and find a partner when you want to. Immersed keeps the record the whole way through.

FAQ

Questions people ask.

Is Immersed a Tandem alternative?+

No. Tandem matches you with native speakers for a language exchange. Immersed has no chat and no partners; it plans, tracks and shows your immersion, and you can log Tandem calls in it as Speaking. They do different jobs.

Do I need a language partner to learn a language?+

Not to start. Many learners build understanding through hours of listening and reading first. A partner is a good tool when you want to speak, try out what you have learned, or stay accountable. I see it as a choice, not a requirement.

Is Tandem free?+

The core is: finding partners, messaging and calls. Tandem Pro adds unlimited translations, more filters, verification and no ads. The App Store lists a 12-month plan at $69.99 and monthly options around $14.99; prices vary by region and offer.

Why can't I chat on Tandem right away?+

Tandem reviews new profiles before members can start chatting. In some countries there has been a waiting list, with reports of up to a week.

How do I track Tandem calls in Immersed?+

Press play in Immersed when the call starts and pick Speaking, or log it afterward with the start and stop time. Make it a repeating task on your timeline so a regular call shows up with a reminder.

Tandem or HelloTalk?+

Both are free-to-start language exchange apps. Tandem reviews members before they chat; HelloTalk is more open, with a social feed and group voice rooms. Many learners try both. Immersed's free blueprint lists HelloTalk on its grammar card, but either way Immersed logs the time the same way.
