Immersed vs HelloTalk

HelloTalk finds you native speakers. Immersed plans the chats into your week.

HelloTalk is a language exchange app: you help someone with your language, they help you with theirs, by text, voice notes, calls and group voice rooms. Immersed is a language immersion tracker and planner: a free plan built from your answers, then a daily timeline for the shows, podcasts and books you learn from, and reports of your hours. Immersed has no chat and no native speakers. It plans and records the time around them.

Free. About two minutes. No account, no card.

The short version

Checked October 24, 2026. Something out of date? Tell me.

If you want real people to text, call and swap corrections with, for free, HelloTalk is one of the biggest places to find them. Immersed does not connect you with anyone.

If you want a plan for the hours of listening and reading that give you something to say, and one record of all of it, exchange chats included, that is Immersed. A speaking partner is not a requirement to start. It is a tool you pick up when it fits, and Immersed fits it into your week.

Hours alone say little. Immersed shows what yours were made of, Speaking and Writing next to listening and reading, so you can see the mix that is moving you forward.

01What each one is for

A chat with a person, and the rest of your week.

HelloTalk says it has more than 70 million learners in 200+ countries and regions, across 260+ languages. You search for partners by native language, city and more, then chat by text, voice or video. Built-in tools translate, transliterate and correct messages. Voicerooms are group voice chats by language, Moments is a feed of posts and questions, and there are livestreams with hosts.

A good exchange is a few chats a week. Immersed covers the rest: a daily routine built around your life, milestones for your first months, what to watch and listen to at your level, and a record of everything, including the time you spend on HelloTalk.

  • HelloTalk: one-to-one chats, voice and video calls, Voicerooms, Moments, livestreams
  • Immersed: a free blueprint, a daily timeline, nine kinds of session and reports
Your language, every day: a timeline of what you will watch, listen to and read

02Do you need a partner yet

Native speakers are a tool you can choose, not a gate you must pass.

I learned Korean mostly through immersion, from my room in Maryland. My view: you don't need speaking partners to start. Many learners spend their first months listening and reading, and the chats that come later go further for it.

An exchange earns its place when you want it: you want to try what you have heard, you want someone your age to text in slang, or a weekly call keeps you showing up. The Fluency Checklist has a last stage, Speaking & writing, for when you get there, and Speaking and Writing are two of the nine activities you can plan and track from day one if you want to start early.

When you are ready, Immersed points you to HelloTalk itself: the free blueprint's Toolkit lists it on the grammar card, next to italki and LangCorrect.

03What users say

Partners are learners, not teachers.

Reviewers like how many ways HelloTalk gives you to connect, and that the core is free. The common complaints are honest ones about any exchange: your partner knows their language but may not explain it well, and a lot of chats fizzle after the small talk. One long review said more than half of its conversations stalled.

Some users report people using the app for dating and unwanted messages. HelloTalk does not vet members, but it has report and block tools. Go in knowing that, and treat the first few partners as a trial.

04Planning and logging

Put the call on your timeline, and log the chat as Speaking or Writing.

Immersed's timeline holds your day from Wake up to Wind down, so a Thursday call with your partner sits next to the podcast on your commute. Make it a repeating task with a reminder, and in the days before, plan input on the topic you want to talk about. You show up with things to say, and the chat lasts longer than the small talk.

When the call starts, press play in Immersed and pick Speaking. Log texting as Writing. Forgot to press play? Log it afterward. Your Growth page stacks your hours by activity, so the calls and texts show up as output next to Active Listening, Reading and the rest, with comprehension over time.

That breakdown is the point. Ten hours of calls on top of two hundred hours of listening is a different learner from ten hours of calls on top of twenty. The report shows which one you are, and links back to the shows and channels that fed the conversations.

Plan it like a day: type "Netflix 7pm 40m" and it lands on your timeline at seven

What HelloTalk does well

  • Real native speakers to talk to, which no tracker or course replaces
  • Huge reach: 70 million+ learners and 260+ languages by its own count
  • The core is free: chats, voice notes and group voice rooms cost nothing
  • Built-in translation, transliteration and correction tools inside the chat
  • Voicerooms and livestreams for listening and speaking in a group when one-to-one feels like too much
  • Casual, everyday language from people your own age, not textbook dialogue

What Immersed does that HelloTalk doesn't

  • Builds a plan from your time, goals and level, with milestones for your first months
  • Plans your exchange calls into a daily timeline alongside the input that feeds them
  • Tracks every hour in the language, not only chats: shows, podcasts, YouTube, books, SRS
  • Suggests what to watch, listen to and read for your language, with a Discover feed that counts
  • Shows Speaking and Writing next to input in your reports, so you see the balance week by week

Pick HelloTalk if

  • You want to start talking with native speakers, for free
  • You like texting and voice notes more than booked video calls
  • You want slang and everyday language from people your age
  • You want group voice rooms where you can listen first and speak when ready
  • Making a friend in the language is what keeps you going

Pick Immersed if

  • You want to build understanding through input before, or alongside, speaking
  • You want a plan that fits your actual day, not only the chats
  • You want one record of all your time in the language, exchange chats included
  • You would rather not depend on a stranger replying to keep your streak

Use both, or move over

Chat on HelloTalk, plan and track it in Immersed

Put a regular call with your HelloTalk partner on the timeline as a repeating task, plan input on the topic before it, and log the call as Speaking and the texting as Writing. Your report then shows output and input side by side.

If you haven't started talking yet, you don't need to rush. Build a base of listening and reading first, watch your comprehension climb on the Growth page, and start an exchange when you want to. Immersed keeps the record the whole way through.

If you want a person to guide the immersion itself, I keep a 1-on-1 coaching waitlist on the coaching page, five people at a time.

FAQ

Questions people ask.

Is Immersed a HelloTalk alternative?+

No. HelloTalk connects you with native speakers to chat with. Immersed has no chat and no partners; it plans, tracks and shows your immersion, and you can log HelloTalk time in it as Speaking or Writing. They do different jobs.

Do I need a language exchange partner to learn?+

Not to start. Many learners build understanding through hours of listening and reading first. A partner is a good tool when you want to speak, try out what you have learned, or stay accountable. I see it as a choice, not a requirement.

Is HelloTalk free?+

Yes, the core is free: finding partners, chatting and voice rooms. VIP costs $12.99 a month or $79.99 a year on the US App Store and, according to reviews, lifts the daily limits on translation and new chats and adds more search filters.

How do I track HelloTalk time in Immersed?+

Press play in Immersed when a call starts and pick Speaking, or Writing for texting. If you forget, log it afterward with the start and stop time. A repeating task on the timeline reminds you of a regular call.

Is HelloTalk safe?+

Most people use it to learn, but members are not vetted and some users report flirting and unwanted messages. Use the report and block tools, keep chats in the app at first, and drop partners who make you uncomfortable.

Does Immersed connect to HelloTalk automatically?+

No. Immersed doesn't read your HelloTalk chats or your viewing history: you press play when a call starts, or log it afterward. The Discover scroll and the free listening games log themselves; a chat never does.

Stop guessing. See what your hours add up to.

Answer a few questions and Immersed builds your plan: a daily routine that fits your life, milestones for your first months, and things to watch at your level. Free, about two minutes, no account needed.

The plan is free and stays free. No card.
